Fishing

There are so many things to do while on holidays at Portland Bay Holiday Park. Portland is the largest city in the region, yet it has the charm of a large country town, set by the sea on the Discovery Coast in Victoria's south west region. Here are our top ‘must see’s’ while you’re here:

For those who love fishing, Portland is an angler's paradise. From a boat or the beach the range of fish that can be hooked are extensive, including snapper, whiting, barracouta, salmon, garfish, haddock, pyke, snook, silver travelly, sweep, flathead, mulloway, mullet, mackerel, yellowtail, shark, crayfish, bream, redfin, parrotfish, gernard and squid. Portland hosts some of the best Blue fin tuna fishing during the months of April through to August and there are many charters available for bookings.    From the fresh water rivers and creeks of the north, to the secluded river region in the west and the magnificent cliffs and beaches bordering the southern ocean; the Discovery Coast in Victoria’s South West Corner offers every angler a world of diversity, in one of the most beautiful and historic locations in Australia.  Portland is the only deep sea fishing port between Adelaide and Port Phillip Bay and its no wonder fisherman come from everywhere to land that fish of a lifetime.

Within the breakwaters of Portland's harbour is a large area for safe boating and sailing as it is protected from westerly winds, the bay may be fished in nearly all weather conditions. There are boat ramps at Allestree (wally’s ramp), Cape Bridgewater, Lower Glenelg National park, Narrawong, Nelson and Tyrrendarah.  A fishing license is required and can be purchased from any Bait & Tackle shop in town.
